This is so incredible!
One of the contestants on Monday night’s new episode of Jeopardy! is going viral after a split-second decision he made to show host Alex Trebek some love and support during his ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer. And after watching the legendary Canadian TV host get choked up in the moment, we can’t help but be a little emotional about this whole thing, too…

Contestant Dhruv Gaur was sitting in a distant third place by the time Final Jeopardy! rolled around. As the final segment played out, it became quickly clear he couldn’t have won, anyway, but the way Gaur used his final answer was SO much better than we could have expected.
As is custom on the show, contestants have 30 seconds to answer the final clue and also wager how much money they’re staking on their response. When this hint (below) came in, everything was going as it always does for the long-running quiz show:
“In the title of a groundbreaking 1890 exposé of poverty in New York City slums, these three words follow ‘How the…'”
Think you know the answer?!
Well, two of the contestants did get it right — but it was Gaur’s final answer that stole the show.

The simple act of love nearly brought the typically perfectly-composed Trebek to tears, and then quickly sent shockwaves through social media as people watched and shared the clip. Gaur himself felt the need to explain why he did it, taking to Twitter to reveal how Alex’s cancer battle was pretty much the only thing on his mind at that point in the episode:

Sad, of course, but very sweet to show solidarity with such a beloved TV host.
The pancreatic cancer news surrounding Trebek over the last few months has been a lot to take in, and it’s difficult to imagine the show without his calming, professional presence. While he’s gotten good news at various points of the treatment process, it’s clear his battle is far from over, and Gaur pretty much said on Monday what we all feel right now.
