It’s Q&A with Perezitos‘ pro party planner, organizer, and all around motherhood expert Amy Malin!!
Perezcious mom, Dawn in Phoenix, has question for Amy we ALL can relate to. She’s having trouble dealing with a grown-up bully!
Dawn asks:
“Hi Amy. I’m loving your Mommy tips! So, this is kind of a weird question, and I hope you can help me out.
This Mom from the playgroup my son is in is really mean. She’s always making rude comments about the other Moms and sometimes she makes snide remarks about the other kids too. I can’t stand being around it and I don’t want my son exposed to this kind of behavior. What do I do?”
That’s a toughie! Let’s see how Amy thinks we should deal with this:
Hi Dawn! I’m glad you dig my Mommy tips!
This Mom from your son’s playgroup sounds like a real bully and those are never fun at any age. Bullies normally pick on others because they are actually really insecure about themselves. They think the best way to lift themselves up is by putting others down, which is the farthest thing from the truth.
You don’t have to take this kind of abuse and you should definitely protect your son from it too. Since a bully gangs up on others, turn the tables and have all of the Moms pull the Mommy Bully aside and in a very nice but firm way, explain how none of you appreciate her rude remarks. Also mention that being mean to the kids and to the other parents is completely unacceptable.
Tell her if she is going through a tough time at home or work, the Playgroup Mommies are happy to be a support system and listen, but none of you are willing to be her doormat or have her lash out at your kids. Hopefully she chills out and apologizes. If she doesn’t stop the bullying, then tell her that the playgroup is all about fun for the kids and if she is going to continue to ruin the spirit of it, then unfortunately her child won’t be able to come back to the playgroup anymore. Maybe that will get her to grow up.
If it doesn’t, and she won’t leave the group, then your best bet is to start a new playgroup with like minded parents who want a bully free space for their children to enjoy playtime.
That’s a ballzie move!
Howeves, Amy is right. Confrontation isn’t always easy — but when it comes to your child it’s worth it!
