There is just no end to Angelina Jolie’s generosity now is there?
Santa Angelina is teaming up with the Microsoft Corporation to defend unaccompanied immigrant children in the U.S.
Together, they are launching a new program!
KIND [Kids In Need of Defense] has an ambitious but achievable agenda. By 2010, we intend to provide legal representation for 100% of unaccompanied children-approximately 2100 children a year-in those areas of the country where the need is greatest: Los Angeles, Seattle, Houston and the Northeastern corridor of the U.S. And we’ll expand our operations throughout the country based on the “best practices” developed through this first critical phase of work.
As the mother of children from around the world, Angelina knows how many kids out there need help.
The United States is one of just a few Western civilized nations that does not provide an appointed counsel for unaccompanied children in immigration court. Many of these kids arrive in this country looking for family, to escape hardship and hopelessness, flee persecution and torture, or are victims of trafficking. Many of these legitimate cases are turned down because the kids simply do not have a lawyer to defend them.
KIND will work to give these kids representation in court and the chance at a better future.
