We never really thought it was, but it’s still nice to hear that Angelina Jolie‘s double mastectomy decision wasn’t based in a fear of getting cancer any time soon, but rather a calm and calculated maneuver to avoid the looming threat.
We’re hearing this directly from her world renowned breast cancer surgeon, Dr. Kristi Funk (if being a surgeon doesn’t pan out, she could always become a DJ)!
Here’s what the doc said:
‘She didn’t have [the double mastectomy] right away, but probably knew with her family history that it was a choice she would eventually make. Her decision was not made overnight. It wasn’t based in fear.’
As we all know, Angelina pulled the trigger on the surgery because she had the BRCA1 cancer gene, also giving her a 50% risk increase for ovarian cancer. The Doc did the surgery knowing full well that Angelina would eventually make it public:
‘I knew that was her intention. She is just philanthropic to the core. She could never keep this a secret, and be who she is! She is someone who wants to save lives and she is doing that every day! Knowing that it would be publicly scrutinized├óΓé¼┬ª I developed some really new and beautiful changes to both the preparation for surgery, and the actual operation.’
So cool!
We’re just extremely proud of Angelina making this decision, given who she is and what she does for a living. It wasn’t easy, but she did it like a badass and we’ve always known that.
There’s NOTHING cowardly about protecting your life, especially when you have a family!
