Ariana Grande Gets Super Emotional Addressing 'Dangerous' Comments About Her Weight

Ariana Grande is sick of people commenting on her body.

In a new interview with French reporter Sally out on Thursday, the Wicked star was asked what it’s like to deal with the pressure to “always look perfect,” which immediately caused the pop star to tear up. She reacted:

“My goodness. I’m not gonna [cry]. Good question.”

Her co-star Cynthia Erivo held her hand throughout the sit-down as Ari opened up:

“I’ve been kind of doing this in front of the public and kind of been, you know, a specimen in a petri dish really since I was 16 or 17, so I have heard it all. I’ve heard every version of it — of what’s wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it’s wrong for different reasons. But that’s everything from — even just the simplest thing — your appearance, you know?”

The Victorious alum went on to say it’s “hard to protect yourself from that noise” when “you’re young and you’re hearing all kinds of things.” But she also pointed out that negativity can come from loved ones, too, adding:

“I think that it’s something that is uncomfortable no matter what scale you’re experiencing it on, even if you go to Thanksgiving dinner, and someone’s granny says, ‘Oh my God, you look skinnier! What happened?’ or ‘You look heavier! What happened?’ That is something that is uncomfortable and horrible no matter where it’s happening — no matter the scale it’s happening on.”

Simply put, she called the invasive commentary “horrible” and “dangerous,” explaining:

“I think in today’s society, there is a comfortability that we shouldn’t have at all — commenting on others’ looks, appearance, what they think is going on behind the scenes or health or how they present themselves. From what you’re wearing to your body to your face to your everything — there’s a comfortability that people have commenting on that that I think is really dangerous. And I think it’s dangerous for all parties involved.”

The Thank U, Next vocalist also calmed fans’ fears by giving her “support system” a shoutout, saying she’s “really lucky” to have people who always remind her she’s “beautiful.” When it comes to the online chatter? She just doesn’t listen anymore:

“I do know what the pressure of that noise feels like, it’s been a resident in my life since I was 17. I just don’t invite it in anymore. It’s not welcome. I have work to do, I have a life to live, I have friends to love on, I have so much love, and it’s not invited, so I don’t leave space for it anymore. And however you all can protect yourselves from that noise — whether it’s at a family reunion or online, if you gotta block people, I don’t care if you have to delete the app entirely — you keep yourself safe because no one has the right to say s**t.”

Powerful!

Amid the Wicked press tour, fans have continuously commented their concerns about both Ariana and Cynthia’s weight. It’s clearly starting to get to her — because no matter if she doesn’t “invite it in,” stuff like this can be hard to fully ignore. It helps that she’s (unfortunately) had years of experience with this and has found ways to deal with it.

Ariana previously asked fans to stop commenting on her body while pointing out they were often comparing her to “the unhealthiest version” of herself. Hear more (below):

We’re just glad to know she has a support system. Thoughts? Share ’em (below).
