Brooke Shields Reveals New Details About Her Decades Long Feud With Tom Cruise Over Postpartum Depression Comments!

Brooke Shields is spilling the tea about her decades-long feud with Tom Cruise!

If you don’t know what happened between them, here’s the story. Brooke published a memoir in 2005 called Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression. In It, she opened up about taking antidepressants after struggling with her mental health following the birth of her daughter Rowan Francis Henchy. Well, Tom had some not-so-great thoughts about her taking medication for her postpartum depression.

That same year, he appeared on The Today Show and went off about how he believes psychiatry is “a pseudo-science,” that Brooke didn’t “understand the history of psychiatry,” claimed she was promoting “very dangerous” drugs, and more. Instead, Tom believed depression could be treated by “vitamins and exercise” alone. Basically, everything he said fell in line with his Scientology beliefs. Ugh. Watch the interview (below):

What the f**k…

Those harmful and insensitive remarks sparked a massive feud between the two stars. Brooke even responded to Tom in an op-ed piece in The New York Times subsequently, firing back that she was “going to take a wild guess and say that Mr. Cruise has never suffered from postpartum depression.” Now, nearly 20 years later, she is sharing new details about the nasty rift between them in her latest memoir, Brooke Shields is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman.

Looking back on the situation, Brooke wrote that if Tom had made a dig at her before she gave birth, she may not have clapped back at him. She even may have “regretted” telling her story then. No! But turning 40 and having “life experience” made her not want to stay silent. The Blue Lagoon star explained, per Us Weekly:

“Had Tom taken a public swing at me before I became a mother, I probably would have stayed quiet. I would have ignored his ridiculous rant. I might have been content to sit back while this very famous man hijacked my experience to advance his own (deluded) agenda. I would have been satisfied that his behavior would speak for itself. Sitting quietly and letting myself be attacked might have been my approach a decade earlier — I might have even regretted sharing my story or felt insecure that maybe my career was stalling while a powerful male movie star was singling me out, sure that I’d never stand a chance in that fight — but now I was emboldened by life experience.”

At that time, she was “growing into my self-confidence” and refused to take the attack from Tom! Brooke went on to recall that the Top Gun: Maverick star “disparaged” her on The Today Show, calling her “use of antidepressants” as “dangerous” and slamming her for “spreading misinformation.” She added:

“An interesting opinion, coming from someone without ovaries.”

Go off!

Rather than ignoring him, Brooke chose to pen the The New York Times op-ed to stick up for herself and other women who were struggling with postpartum depression:

“I was sticking up for myself, and for women who were suffering, against irrational and dangerous comments from an unschooled actor who was speaking way out of his depth.”

Postpartum is no joke. It can be a brutal and challenging experience for moms. So, we’re glad she not only told her story but stuck up for herself to help others! According to Brooke, her piece “sparked outrage” at Tom, but, most importantly, it “spurred discussions on the reality and prevalence of postpartum depression.” While the author may not have changed Tom’s opinion on the matter, she at least got him to “eventually” come to her home and apologize for his actions — though never “publicly.” Granted, it apparently wasn’t a great personal apology either! What Brooke remembered of the conversation is:

“It wasn’t the world’s best apology, but it’s what he was capable of, and I accepted it.”

Brooke is such a kind person not to hold a grudge against Tom! No one would blame her if she did! Reactions, Perezcious readers? Let us know in the comments.
