Bully Director Says Releasing The Film Unrated Was 'The Right Thing To Do'

Bully director Lee Hirsch agrees with Harvey Weinstein‘s decision to release his documentary as unrated.
After much debate, the Weinstein Co. made the harsh decision of keeping the film unrated in order to send the MPAA a message.
At the movie’s premiere, Hirsch had this to say:

“People are frustrated. They feel like this rating was unjust. They├óΓé¼Γäóre tired of the double standard of gratuitous violence getting through and a film that could actually do some good that├óΓé¼Γäós not about just exploitation getting slammed with this rating.
I think that the whole movie was an intervention. It was the right thing to do. It didn├óΓé¼Γäót matter what happened to us as filmmakers at that point.”

He also spoke about the schools in Sioux City, Iowa, who gave him access to their classrooms and students, thanking them for allowing him to film them.

“They├óΓé¼Γäóre on the road to making change. They did it because of that. They said if this film teaches us something, if it can illuminate this problem, then we├óΓé¼Γäóre all for it.
You don├óΓé¼Γäót have to change the world to stop bullying. You have to just make a decision. And every single person that sees this has access to that movement.”

And just like the overall message of the film says, “everybody CAN make a difference.” Just by going out and watching this film and telling others to do the same is a step in the right direction.
