It’s official. The Alabama woman who claimed she was kidnapped after seeing a toddler walking on the highway only to later admit to lying about the whole thing has been charged!
During a press conference on Friday, Hoover Police Department Chief Nicholas Derzis announced that Carlee Russell was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors of making false statements to the police. But he’s not too happy about the situation! Derzis noted his “frustration” that the 25-year-old only received misdemeanor charges and called for an “enhancement” to be included in the law:
“Existing laws only allowed the charges that were filed to be filed.”

So what does this mean for Carlee? Well, Derzis explained she was charged with two class A misdemeanors: false reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident. Each is punishable with up to one year in jail – so she’s facing up to a couple years behind bars if convicted! She also faces a $6,000 fine.
At this time, neither Carlee nor her family has spoken out about the charges against her. However, Derzis said she has since been released from prison after posting a reported $2,000 bond. We’ll have to see what happens next in this shocking case. But things are not looking good for her right now! Reactions to the arrest, Perezcious readers? Let us know in the comments.
