Celebrities In Mexico Are Calling On Hollywood And The World To Pay Attention To Femicide

Mexico has suffered a long history of “femicides” or the “intentional murder of women because they are women.” Tens of thousands of women took to the streets of Mexico City to protest this human rights crisis and wake their leaders up. This was just the beginning though. Thousands more women participated in a strike they called “A Day Without Women”. Very few women showed up to work and the whole country felt a deafening reminder. With up to 10 women a day murdered in Mexico, the protestors wanted to show their country that this is their future if nothing changes.

The thousands of brave women who marched and protested were not alone in their outcry. Narcos and Star Wars Rogue One star Diego Luna, and international model Alejandra Rodriguez all spoke their mind and have used their platforms to draw attention to this cause and the corruption that perpetuates it. “There are many people guilty of terrible crimes who walk free. They continue to operate within the government and in the private sector. There is an absurd tolerance toward delinquency in Mexico.” Diego said in an interview last month.

Alejandra also voiced her support. She released the following statement on all social media platforms. “This has to stop now. I’m calling upon all of my celebrity friends in Hollywood and beyond to use their voice and platform to shine a light on this terror. Those in power have to do better. We’ve had enough.”

The efforts of these activists have certainly reached every corner of the world. Meghan Markle on the same day as the women’s march in Mexico visited a school in East London, heard the students talk about woman labor activists, and emphasized to all the students to appreciate the women in their lives every day.

With so many problems to fight in the world it can get very overwhelming, but we are glad to know that there are thousands of brave women fighting this one. We support you!
