More problems for Walmart in China!
This time authorities have arrested two employees, shut down 13 locations for two days and fined them $421,000 after they discovered Walmart was marketing regular pork as higher priced organic meat.
If that sounds harsh, you’re not alone.
Monitor Group‘s Hong Kong-based head of consumer goods practice Torsten Stocker said:
“It seems very excessive. I could see if they were ordered to stop selling pork or to shut down their fresh meat cases, but why close down the entire store? It seems a very strong reaction.”
Others believe the punishment was politically motivated or even because it’s a foreign company.
By now Walmart should be used to being under China’s microscope.
Earlier this year the country’s National Development and Reform Commission made a big stink over the mega-retailers “deceptive pricing” and threatened to fine them for violating price laws.
