Dark Knight Rises Costume Designer Reveals Deleted Scene That Explains Bane's Backstory

While The Dark Knight Rises had some flaws, we really did enjoy it and thought it was a fantastic close to a fantastic superhero trilogy.
Even though the movie was already long at 164 minutes (we could have watched 184), one thing we thought that could have used some more screen time was Bane‘s backstory. However, if Christopher Nolan releases a director’s cut on DVD, then we might get our wish.
Costume designer Lindy Hemming revealed that there was a lot about the character’s past that was shot, but (unbeknownst to her since she hadn’t seen the movie yet) ultimately cut in the editing room.

“The thing that you should have seen during that sequence is [Bane] being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury. Even if he hasn├óΓé¼Γäót got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he├óΓé¼Γäós learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he├óΓé¼Γäós wearing an early version of his waist belt. It├óΓé¼Γäós showing support, but it├óΓé¼Γäós not the finished one he eventually wears. He├óΓé¼Γäós also wearing an early version of his gas mask, all glued together ├óΓé¼┬ª If you look at the film, unless they├óΓé¼Γäóve cut it├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥and I├óΓé¼Γäóm sure they haven├óΓé¼Γäót├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥there├óΓé¼Γäós a whole early section for Tom Hardy where he├óΓé¼Γäós fighting and being taunted by people. He├óΓé¼Γäós got chains on him, and he├óΓé¼Γäós standing on a wooden thing while people are attacking him. And in that scene, he├óΓé¼Γäós wearing a much more ragged, primitive version of the mask.”

After learning that what she was describing wasn’t in the film people are seeing in theaters, she added:

“Well that’s an awful shame, but I suppose you have to cut things. I won’t elaborate on it too much, because it isn’t in the film, but there was another section that showed you why he had the mask and where it came from.”

Ugh! We want to see it now.
Even though the the last two Batman movies’ DVD/Blu-ray releases didn’t include any deleted scenes, we hope Nolan makes an exception for the final installment of the series.
