Demi Lovato doesn’t have a filter.
So, it’s no surprise the pop princess sat down with Refinery29 to discuss her past struggle with drugs, alcohol, addiction, and mental illness.

The brunette beauty opened up about how substance abuse affected her attitude, saying:
“Prior to getting sober, I was one of those people who was like, I don’t give a f*ck, whatever. And I used that as an excuse to do whatever I wanted. I was a nightmare to work with.”
The 23-year-old even went on to use some pretty harsh words to describe her old behavior, admitting she was:
“Just b*tchy, a c*nt.”
Wow. We love how honest she’s being!
The gorgeous gal has been sober for over four years, but confessed the journey towards this impressive milestone was not an easy one:
“I had to learn the hard way that I can’t do parties anymore. Some people can go out and not be triggered, but that’s not the case for me.”
In fact, the singer revealed she couldn’t even bring herself to watch the Amy Winehouse documentary Amy:
“To see white powder in a movie? To see someone shooting up? It’s too triggering. If I feel even 1% unsure that I’m in a place where I can watch it, then I just don’t do it.”
Now that she’s clean, happy, and healthy, Miz Lovato is more Confident than ever, even though not everyone believes her sobriety success will last:
“I’m still underestimated. I still have more things to prove ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ not just about the things I can do with my voice. Some people think that because I’m young, I can’t stay sober. But these are things I want to prove to myself.”
Read on for even more HIGHlights from her interview:
On Kesha‘s sexual assault lawsuit against Dr. Luke:
“I don’t know what happened, and it’s none of my business, to be honest. My thing was whether it did or didn’t happen, this is somebody coming forward. And unfortunately, there’s way too much shame put on victims coming forward talking about being date-raped, raped, sexually abused. So then people feel like they can’t come forward anymore because they’ll just be torn to shreds.”
On criticizing Taylor Swift‘s donation to Kesha:
“I got too passionate. I get carried away on Twitter, and that’s what I said, and that’s that. Listen, there’s nothing positive that comes from pitting women against each other. There are women that I don’t get along with, and that’s fine. My thing is, don’t brand yourself a feminist if you don’t do the work. I have an immense amount of respect for women like Lena Dunham…or Beyonc├â┬⌐, who make amazing political statements through their work.”
On engagement rumors with Wilmer Valderrama:
“It’s nobody’s business but ours, and when it happens, it happens.”
On not having a filter on social media:
“I’m not going to stop saying what I believe in. I have no problem standing up for myself. Maybe I got it from growing up in Texas, but I never took sh*t from anybody. Now I know how to do it without pushing people away. You just don’t approach things with a F*ck You mentality. Instead it’s: This is the way I’m perceiving things. There’s nothing wrong with my beliefs or feelings. So let’s agree to disagree, or let’s just disagree.”
On Confident and Cool For The Summer not hitting number one on the charts:
“I was really bummed about it because that’s what I was going for. I got to a point where I was like, Oh my god, it does not f*cking matter. At the end of the day, I’m going to be on tour and I want to be performing songs on stage that I can sing my ass off to and really feel when I’m on stage. So now I have a much better sense of my music.”
