Before you even ask, no, Kylie Jenner is not to blame for this!
In case you haven’t heard, there’s a rumored new beauty treatment gaining popularity worldwide that reportedly asks women to inject cosmetic fillers around their cupid’s bow to create the appearance of “devil lips,” as seen in the feature image above.
We’ve witnessed our fair share of weird trends go viral, but this might be the strangest thing we’ve seen since wavy eyebrows (briefly) became a thing.

The procedure is said to have originated in Russia but quickly drew attention from beauty, skincare, and high-fashion fanatics across the globe.
The filler injection aims to create a wave-like arch to an individual’s upper or bottom lip and the effects are semi-permanent.
Take another look at the unique fad also known as “octopus lips”, (below):
Um, wow. These certainly make a statement, but not one everybody agrees with!
Ever since these wild before-and-after images began popping up online, they’ve sparked a fierce debate as to whether or not this sort of cosmetic enhancement is even real or just a product of some good old-fashioned Photoshop.
This is 2019. People will do ANYTHING for clout.
Well, Dr. Krystyna Wilczynski, a London-based cosmetic dentist and facial aesthetician gave her expert opinion on it to the Daily Mail: and told the outlet she doesn’t believe the pics are real:
“You cannot change the anatomical shape of the lips like this. You can sharpen and contour by enhancing the vermillion border, but these ‘devil lips’ are unnatural.”
In addition, she gave a stern warning about the scary potential side-effects of the procedure to anyone who might be considering it:
“Filler injected inappropriately could end up in blood vessels, causing blockages and leading to necrosis (death) of the tissue. The vessels are around the lips, so using filler inappropriately is what can cause this.”
She wasn’t the only one with concerns, either!

Beauty guru Nilam Holmes also passionately spoke out about the trend on Instagram and called it “wrong on all levels.”
Part of the lengthy message to her followers (and customers of her Dermaspa aesthetician service) reads:
“This trend is WRONG on all levels .. devil lips!? It looks unnatural and ridiculous. The clue is in the title really .. it is unnecessary disfigurement! Whether it is tattooing and/or filler .. it looks terrible. I thought it was photoshop and a joke for Halloween when I first saw it but apparently not. Please don’t be naive and follow silly trends like this. You will not be able to reverse it easily and go back to your natural lips if at all. Your lip border will be distorted and it won’t wear off evenly so you will have frilly lips for years to come. There are 20 more reasons I can think of. No one should encourage clients or teach this to practitioners and enable them to disfigure someone else’s face deliberately.”
Eek! Even if someone did want this effect on their face, it sounds like the complications that potentially await them are not worth all the trouble. It’s also worth mentioning this would make for an extremely awkward first date conversation when you show up with a plump pucker that resembles octopus legs more than anything else. LOLz.
