We are two evenings away from discovering what actions moralist-murderer Dexter will take, now that sister Deb has stumbled upon his slice-happy secret…
But before our questions are answered and we dive into another installment of Showtime’s often humorous drama Dexter, we get to hear insights about the game changer of a season from the show’s stars, Jennifer Carpenter (Deb) and Michael C. Hall (Dexter)!
On the complexities of season seven, specifically juggling the job of head police officer and Dexter’s sinister secret, Jennifer states:
“It’s the first season where I’ve felt like I need a voiceover; I need the writers to tell me where I am because I have no map for it… The harder my job is, the more fun it is to watch; that’s my hope. It certainly doesn’t back us into a corner; if anything it opens up all kinds of amazing doors.”
And Dexter will endure a whole new case of inner turmoil, only this time rather than battling his own demons, he’ll have to deal with how his demons affect one of the only people he kinda, sorta loves!
Michael expresses:
“It’s a real shit situation. It’s fundamental: Dexter over the life of the show has been initially someone who claims to be without the capacity for authentic human emotion and we’re meant to be suspicious of that. Deb knowing what she knows reboots the whole landscape and Dexter is now human — but he’s not compartmentalizing his humanity. In the pilot, when we’re getting to know Dexter in his world, he talks about his sister and says, ‘If I could have feelings at all or for anyone, I’d have them for Deb.’ We see her come into an awareness of some sort of deeper, more conflict-laden feelings for him. It’s undeniable to him that he has a genuine connection to her and that he does genuinely care about her and about other people close to him, namely his son, in ways that he can’t deny yet he does maintain an allegiance to his compulsion.”
There is also the introduction of new character Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski), the complex police woman who is brought to the Miami Metro Police to assist with an investigation.
Showrunner Scott Buck says of the new addition:
“There will be a strong connection between Deb and Hannah. In a professional sense, they very much zero in on each other in a very big and powerful way and it takes very unexpected turns. Hannah becomes a big part of Dexter’s journey throughout the season because he has met someone who understands him in a way that Debra perhaps will not.”
Ooooo it all sounds like a wonderfully fresh take on a show that, while VERY entertaining, has gotten slightly repetitive over the past 6 seasons.
But after hearing about all the change ups AND after last season’s crayyyyzeee cliffhanger, we are as thrilled as Dexter is when he takes that first cut into paralyzed flesh about the show’s upcoming premiere THIS Sunday!
