As part of Putin’s ongoing plan to — sorry, Donald Trump‘s plan to break every alliance and destroy every deal, he withdrew in May from the Iran Nuclear Deal.
Essentially, we used to have sanctions against Iran to hurt their economy as punishment for continuing their nuclear program.
Under Barack Obama we got to the next step in which the U.S., the U.N., and the European Union brought Iran to the bargaining table, and they agreed to stop any nuclear weapons advancement in return for the sanctions being lifted.

But Trump hated that. Anything that looks like the world coming together peacefully, anything that looks like compromise. He hates that stuff.
So he withdrew the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal. And now the sanctions are returning. (Find more on all that HERE!)
