A California neighborhood has changed forever after a mother and daughter were brutally stabbed in a seemingly unprovoked attack.
Burbank Police Department officers responded to North Brighton Street in Burbank at around 6:00 a.m. on Monday after receiving reports of a multiple-person stabbing. When they arrived, officers discovered two injured women suffering from grisly stab wounds. Both women were promptly transported to a local hospital, where one victim tragically succumbed to her wounds.
Little identifying information was immediately available, but neighbor Victor Goli confirmed to ABC7 the victims were mother and daughter, Arti Varma and Meera Varma.

According to Goli, the mother Arti was the victim who tragically passed away, while daughter Meera is said to currently be fighting for her life in critical condition. He revealed to the outlet the Varma stabbing was the result of a home invasion:
“It was kind of a shock to hear just a few minutes ago that their house was broken into.”
Arti served as a teacher at Bret Harte Elementary School, where she was beloved by many. Her friend and neighbor Cristina Strattan told the news station:
“She was an amazing teacher, and she loved being a teacher. She was such a bright light. She was always so joyful, so proud of her kids.”
On the attack, she added:
“Is it something that we have to worry about as a neighborhood? If it’s someone they know that makes it even harder to process because they were such good people. I can’t imagine someone would intentionally want to hurt them.”
As of now, the suspect has yet to be identified and an official motive is unclear. Burbank is a typically peaceful town north of Hollywood but still within Los Angeles County. More details (below):
