After six seasons of nail-biting drama, Downton Abbey gave happy send offs to most of the Crawley household in its series finale!
The Emmy-winning drama concluded with some surprising twists — from a luxurious wedding, to a pregnancy, to an actual birth!
Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) did her best to ensure there was no bad blood between herself and Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) and even arranged a surprise meet-up between Edith and Bertie Belham (Harry Hadden-Paton) in hopes of mending her relationship with her sister.

Bertie admitted he still loves Edith and wants her hand in marriage — despite her lies about her secret out daughter Marigold — which resulted in Edith getting the wedding of her dreams that she deserved!

As an added bonus, Mary waited until after Edith’s wedding day to reveal she’s pregnant!
Speaking of babies, Anna (Joanne Froggatt) finally gave birth to a son, but there was no time to go to the hospital, so the delivery ended up happening on Lady Mary’s bed! Sorry, girl!
And the happy endings were just getting started. Daisy (Sophie McShera) and Andy (Michael Fox) realized they are soulmates, and Cousin Isobel (Penelope Wilton) finally agreed to marry Lord Merton (Douglas Reith)!

The series also included a bittersweet passing of the torch. We can’t think of anyone more suitable to be Downton’s head butler than Carson (Jim Carter), but he makes the decision to step down after his palsy condition worsened.
Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) hired Thomas (Rob James-Collier) to step in — which oddly felt satisfying, since he has had quite the redemptive season.

The final words of the series were uttered by none other than Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith), in a discussion about change with Isobel — who argued to toast the new year because:

“We’re going forward to the future and not back into the past.”

In the most fitting dialogue to close a series, the Dowager Countess shot back:

“If only we had the choice!”

All in all, the finale was one big happy ending tied up in a bow. And with all of the series’ intense drama, we’re so relieved to see everything work out for our favorite characters!
