Dr. Jim Withers isn’t a doctor who just practices medicine — he also practices ‘street medicine,’ which is a term he came up with after he grew to love caring for the homeless at night.
He’s a firm believer in this:
“the best way to care for the homeless is to treat them where they live.”
Which makes sense, because if you wait for the homeless to come in… well, there’s not telling how bad it has to be for them to seek help.
So he took to the streets of Pittsburgh to reach them before they got worse!
He usually carries a backpack full of things to help — remedies, bandages, drugstore gatherings — and he even goes out with a crew of medical students!
