It is illegal to sell elephants in India, however many people are getting involved in the trade to make money.
Just recently police in India have found an elephant smuggling ring. Five of the traders were arrested and many animals that were about to be sold out of the country were saved.

Because it is becoming so popular to trade elephants, it is a rule that all baby elephants must be fitted with a microchip.
This is sad, especially since the elephant population in India is already decreasing from the devastation of forests and increasing amount of cities.
