Officials, including NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, are saying the “worst is over” when it comes to the damage of Hurricane Irene.
Over 370,000 people have been evacuated and millions are still without power. So far, there have been 14 reported deaths.
As for city services, such as the mass transit system, Bloomberg says he’s unsure if it will reopen Monday morning, however it’s likely that limited service will be available for the morning commute. The financial district also plans to reopen.
As for damage, many areas are still flooded, including around the East River, which breached its seawall. Major highways around the city are still shut down due to heavy rainfall and flooding.
We’re thankful that the damage wasn’t as severe as predicted, but we still know there are many people out there who are still reeling from the damage left by Irene.
Please stay safe and try to stay indoors if all possible. We are praying for everyone on the East Coast!!
