The track was written WAY back in 1982 as part of Jonathan’s attempt to bring George Orwell‘s 1984 to the stage as a musical. When it became clear due to rights issues, he wouldn’t be able to stage it anywhere close to the year 1984, Jonathan instead reformed his ideas into an original dystopian musical called Superbia.
But out of that initial creative brainstorm came the song S.O.S., to be sung by protagonist Winston Smith as the show’s closing number. The show may have never been fully produced, but this new version is!

The Jonathan Larson Project also includes Valentine’s Day, a song which was cut from Rent.
You can see the video for that track (below):

The Jonathan Larson Project will be released in a CD package including a 40-page hardbound book featuring previously unseen archived materials later this season, and the digital version is available for preorder now HERE.
