Yikes!!!
A new toy put out by Mattel, called “Video Girl Barbie,” has the FBI warning parents that it could be used as a “possible child pornography production method.”
The Barbie, which features a camera lens hidden in her necklace, and a small monitor and USB port on her back, is one of top holiday toys on the market right now. With most stores selling out, including online shops, many critics fear that this particular toy could be used a tool to lure young children.
Mattel has released a statement about the Barbie, saying:
The FBI is not reporting that anything has happened. Steve Dupre from the FBI Sacramento field office has confirmed there have been no incidents of this doll being used as anything other than its intent. Mattel products are designed with children and their best interests in mind. Many of Mattel’s employees are parents themselves and we understand the importance of child safety – it is our number one priority.
This is a touchy subject. While we want to believe that it’s just an innocent toy that many kids can play with and have fun, it’s still a bit of a concern of how it can be used to hurt kids.
