Two young female police officers were fatally shot in uniform this week.
Davis Police Department officials say Officer Natalie Corona (above, left) was investigating a three-car traffic accident at about 6:45 p.m. on Thursday near Sacramento when one of the people involved in the crash opened fire, striking her.
Corona, the 22-year-old daughter of a retired sheriff’s deputy who’d only been on the job a few weeks, was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where she later died.

The department issued a citywide shelter-in-place order as officers searched for the suspect, who was later found dead in a house near the shooting from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have not identified the suspect, nor determined what started the shooting.
Corona had graduated from the Sacramento Police Department’s training academy in July and completed her field training right before Christmas. Police Chief Darren Pytel described the rookie as a “rising star in the department.”
Her death comes just a day after another young female cop, Louisiana Officer Chateri Payne (above, right), was fatally shot on her way to work Wednesday night outside a home on the west side of Shreveport.

The 22-year-old officer was taken to Ochsner LSU Health hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Shrevenport Police did not release details on any persons of interest in the shooting, but revealed one person had been detained for questioning.

The San Francisco Police Department posted a tribute to both officers on its Facebook page Friday, sharing:

Our thoughts are with the family, friends and fellow officers of @cityofdavispd Natalie Corona & @ShreveportPD Chatéri…

So tragic. Our hearts go out to the officers’ families and both departments as they mourn the losses of these young heroes.
