Russia will only have one competitor in the men’s individual figure skating program at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and they went with a VERY sexy choice!
Former gold medalist and 3-time world champion Evgeni Plushenko will be representing the host nation in the winter games, however, it wasn’t looking to promising for the 31-year-old skater!
The much younger Maksim Kovtun managed to beat out the veteran at the Russian Championships back in December, and he looked like a lock to head to Sochi. Sadly, his dreams were dashed when he ended up getting 5th place at the European Championships in Budapest.
Evgeni actually missed the entire European tournament due to an injury, but he was able to hold a test skate behind closed doors for Russian officials and judges that apparently went so well he landed a spot on the olympic team!
The veteran has managed to earn a medal at the last three winter olympics including a gold medal back in 2006, however, this past year has been plagued with injury and he hasn’t been competing in many tournaments this season.
Overall, the announcement is still pretty exciting as Evgeni gained quite a reputation in the past for his routine set to the song Sex Bomb that usually involved him wearing a muscle suit and ending up in a golden thong by the end of the performance!
We can only hope this happens in Sochi!!!
