The cyclosporiasis outbreak related to fresh produce like lettuce, cilantro, and parsley has taken two lives in Michigan, according to CNN. The outbreak is what many will know as the “explosive diarrhea” infection linked to Taco Bell and Taylor Farms‘ iceberg lettuce, though an exact cause has yet to be determined.

According to what the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services said on Monday, the two deaths were related to the outbreak — but the victims had “underlying health conditions”:
“Two deaths have been identified as part of the cyclosporiasis outbreak affecting Michigan. According to medical records, both individuals had significant underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration. No additional information will be provided on these two cases.”
So sad and scary!
The CDC has acknowledged online that it “is aware of two cyclosporiasis-related deaths in people with underlying health conditions from Michigan as part of this outbreak” as they continue to research and fight the outbreak.
