Daenerys Targaryen's Ancestors Will Come To Life In NEW 'Game Of Thrones' Prequel Series -- Co-Written By George R.R. Martin!

Daenerys is excited for Game Of Thrones prequels

Did the Game of Thrones series finale leave a dragon-sized void in your life? Not to worry — more prequels are coming!

On Thursday, Deadline reported HBO is close to finalizing a deal for a Game of Thrones prequel set 300 years before the events of the beloved fantasy series, which will explore the reign of House Targaryen.

The series is being helmed by George R.R. Martin himself, along with the co-creator and executive producer of Colony, Ryan Condal. The prequel will largely be based on one of Martin’s books, Fire & Blood — which tells the tale of Aegon the Conqueror, his conquest and rule in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and the dynasty he left to his children.

If the pre-Daenerys series ends up being green-lit, fans will likely see the formation of King’s Landing and the Iron Throne, the birth of the Baratheon house, and the great Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of Dragons. (We’ll probably be treated to some of that famous Targaryen incest, too!)

So far, three other GoT prequels have moved forward in development at HBO. The series furthest along in production, starring Naomi Watts and informally codenamed Bloodmoon, finished filming the pilot episode in Northern Ireland this summer.

Unlike the potential Targaryen-centric series, Bloodmoon is said to explore the more ancient history of Westeros: it’s set to take place roughly 5,000 years before Ned Stark got his head chopped off, and will focus on the origin of the White Walkers and the formation of House Stark.

In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, GRRM said while Bloodmoon predates dragons, plenty of other terrifying creatures will be present:

“Obviously the White Walkers are here — or as they’re called in my books, The Others — and that will be an aspect of it. There are things like direwolves and mammoths.”

But no Lannisters, unfortunately. The 70-year-old author added:

“The Lannisters aren’t there yet, but Casterly Rock is certainly there. It’s like the Rock of Gibraltar. It’s actually occupied by the Casterlys — for whom it’s still named after in the time of Game of Thrones.”

Sounds intense!

In July, President of HBO Programming Casey Bloys confirmed shooting had “wrapped” and the Bloodmoon pilot was in the editing bay. He said at the HBO TCA press tour:

“The shooting has wrapped, it looks really good, the cast was amazing.”

Martin and Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kick-Ass) are the creators of the new series, with Goldman serving as the showrunner. GoT showrunners Damon Benioff and D.B. Weiss will not be involved — and we’re sure a number of fans are relieved about that!
