We now know the cause of death for Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa’s dog.
According to a necropsy obtained by The Associated Press on Friday, their 12-year-old Australian Kelpie mix, Zinna, likely died from dehydration and starvation. This poor pup. The report stated that the Santa Fe County animal control agency noted the pooch’s stomach was empty except for small amounts of bile and hair. The necropsy also ruled Infectious disease, trauma, and poisoning as potential causes of death.

The report that Zinna passed away from a lack of food and water does not come as a surprise. Robert Gruda told USA Today last weekend that Zinna had been on crate rest while recovering from a “major surgery” in January. When Betsy passed away from hantavirus on February 11, the doggo had been locked inside a crate in the bathroom closet while the other two surviving dogs, Bear and Nikita, were able to roam in and out of the house freely.
Gene died a week later from heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s. Because of the disease, the 95-year-old actor likely had no idea Betsy died nor probably realized Zinna was still in the crate without food or water. Just heartbreaking.
