Hailey Bieber is getting candid about her health.
During an appearance on the SHE MD podcast on Tuesday, the 29-year-old beauty mogul opened up about her unexpected journey being pregnant with her 16-month-old son, Jack Blues Bieber. Hailey revealed her pregnancy came as a total shock because she had been diagnosed with a scary medical condition right beforehand! She said:
“It was a surprise. She told me this was going to happen because she was like…”

Podcast host Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi, who is her OB/GYN, “told her like, ‘Don’t get pregnant’” all because Hailey had a uterine septum that she needed surgery to fix before she got pregnant. The Rhode founder recalled:
“So I had a septum in my uterus, and Dr. A kept saying, ‘Well, we need to look at this and keep an eye on it before you get pregnant because it could potentially be an issue. I don’t really know. We’ve got to see. I might have to give you a small surgery for it. Not sure.’”
Hailey did not plan to get pregnant at the time, so she wasn’t too concerned about the condition. However, the universe had different plans for the model! Hailey continued:
“And I was like, ‘Okay. Well, I’m not thinking about getting pregnant right now, so we’ll just cross that bridge when we get there.’ And then I magically got pregnant.”
Dr. Aliabadi chimed in to say:
“And then she calls me, and she’s like, ‘I’m pregnant!’ And I’m like, ‘No!’”
But what is a uterine septum? Dr. Aliabadi broke it down on the podcast, saying:
“So uterine septum is genetic. Again, we’re born with it. So basically, imagine you have a normal-shaped uterus. But inside the cavity of the uterus, imagine this little wall that comes in, this thin wall that comes in. You can have a mild, moderate or a severe septum. Basically we measure it on ultrasound. If it’s less than 1 cm, it’s mild. If it’s 1 to 2 cm, it’s moderate.”
In Hailey’s case, she was considered moderate — and that meant she was at a “higher risk” for a miscarriage during her pregnancy with Jack. Whoa. Dr. Aliabadi revealed:
“Yours was moderate. It affects 1 to 3% of women, and with moderate, you have a higher risk of miscarriage with the pregnancy. And so the risk for her was about maybe 25 to 40% risk of miscarriage. And a 10 to 20% risk of preterm delivery.”
How scary!!!
However, Hailey was more concerned about a preterm delivery than a miscarriage:
“Which I think was our bigger scare. Because we realized as the baby was growing, the septum it was, you know, expanding. Everything was opening and doing what it needed to do, luckily.”
Fortunately, Hailey’s pregnancy turned out fine! But Dr. Aliabadi shared that Justin Bieber’s wife had faith that everything would work out:
“And I never forget, as I was telling her, ‘Well, these are the risks.’ And she looked at me, she’s like, ‘You know what? I believe that everything’s gonna work out fine.’ Remember this? And I looked at her, and I’m like, ‘I think so too.’”
Due to Hailey’s condition and family history, Dr. Aliabadi administered a PreTRM Test, an advanced blood test that analyzes placental proteins to estimate the risk of delivering before 37 weeks. The former Drop the Mic host ended up being low-risk, but she really thought she would deliver early:
“I was convinced I was going to go into labor early because of my mom’s history… but my body had its own plan.”
She made it to 39 weeks and had to be induced after she started leaking amniotic fluid. And unfortunately, she had a terrifying birth! As you’ll recall, she suffered from a postpartum hemorrhage and was “bleeding really badly,” to the point where she realized “people die” while giving birth. Oof! We’re glad she and Jack are OK!
