Halsey Reveals She Once Considered Sex Work To Survive As A Homeless Teen In NYC

Halsey is getting really real about her challenging upbringing — and she’s hoping her story of perseverance can somehow benefit somebody now that she’s through the toughest parts!
The Bad At Love singer was being honored at the Ending Youth Homelessness: A Benefit For My Friend’s Place gala in Hollywood on Saturday when she spoke to the crowd about her own experience with homelessness as a teenager and how much of a struggle it was for her to survive.

Speaking to the packed crowd last night, Halsey opened up emotionally about her time on the streets — and got real about what it was like out there, and what was being asked of her to survive (below):

“When I was living in New York, I was a teenager. My friends were picking out decorations for their dorms, and I was debating on whether or not I should let a stranger inside me so I could pay for my next meal … It wasn’t because I did something bad, it wasn’t because something was wrong with me, and it wasn’t because my parents didn’t love me, ‘cause they did, very much.”

Wow… Things just got really real, really quickly for the performer, who cited a “series of unfortunate circumstances” that led her to being initially kicked out of her home as a teenager when she dropped out of community college.
She continued, too, noting how roughly 40 percent of minors experiencing homelessness are part of the LGBTQ community and acknowledging that they have it so tough in these unwinnable situations (below):

“Many of them have been ostracized from their families and from their communities because of people who don’t agree with their lifestyle. This means that they have a harder time getting access to health care, to legal services, to education, to mental health services, which makes it all the more difficult for them.”

Ugh — so true, unfortunately.
And it’s so real — and vulnerable — for Halsey to open up like this! Seriously powerful stuff that hopefully will inspire and help somebody survive their own difficult times just as she did.
