Five passengers from the hantavirus cruise ship are leaving quarantine!
As we’ve been following, the American passengers of the MV Hondius ship who were evacuated after a hantavirus outbreak was determined were taken to the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. But now five of them have decided to return home, leaving just 13 at the facility, according to US health officials on Monday.

According to Reuters, the CDC had requested the passengers stay at the unit through May 31, though the total recommended quarantine period is 42 days as symptoms can take a long time to develop. The travelers were given the opportunity to return home at the mid-way point, where they will continue being monitored for the next 21 days under the jurisdiction of state and local public heath departments. The five passengers headed home all remain symptom-free and have met public health criteria to be safely monitored outside the facility.
It’s now up to state health departments to continue daily symptom monitoring, maintain 24/7 oversight, and provide guidance to the passengers for the remainder of their at-home quarantine, the Department of Health and Human Services announced.
In total, 41 US residents are being monitored for the deadly infection in connection to the cruise ship. We hope everyone continues to stay safe!
