So yeah, remember that whole thing where J.K. Rowling FINALLY offered LGBT fans of the Harry Potter universe a bit of representation by saying Dumbledore was gay.
Only, you know, never mentioning it in the books, just after the fact?
Well, it looks like the Fantastic Beasts films will continue that “don’t ask, don’t spell” policy with hot Dumbledore Jude Law.

When Entertainment Weekly asked The Crimes Of Grindelwald director David Yates if we would finally get concrete reference to the wizard’s sexual orientation, he disappointingly said:
“Not explicitly. But I think all the fans are aware of that. He had a very intense relationship with Grindelwald when they were young men. They fell in love with each other’s ideas, and ideology and each other.”
See, don’t worry, guys! It’s 2018, we can get away with weakly implied homosexuality, just so long as all our homophobic fans don’t have to face it! Progress!
Naturally, fans let their feelings about the insult be known on Twitter — see some of the strongest reactions (below)!
jkr: dumbledore is gay lol
fans: okay but u didn’t put it in the source material
jkr: i know lol
*ten years later*
fans: okay you’ve got a chance to put it in canon now
jkr: hehe lol i know
fans: so are you gonna
jkr: no lol

Uhhh Dumbledore and Grindelwald used to date though??? So what is this movie even going to be https://t.co/XxgKf9HmPB

Dumbledore will be exactly as ~canonically gay~ in Fantastic Beasts 2 (2018) as he was in Harry Potter 1 (2001), which is to say: not at all.

If you’re not going to make Young Dumbledore’s sexuality explicitly clear in Fantastic Beasts then why even bother with this film at all tbh?
— Jill Pantozzi ♿ (@JillPantozzi) January 31, 2018
“Not explicitly,” Yates replied when asked if the film makes it clear that Dumbledore is gay. “But I think all the fans are aware of that.”
IT’S 2018 LMAO GET IT TOGETHER

Choose your fighter but bullshit edition:
David Yates saying Dumbledore is not explicitly gay in Fantastic Beasts because “fans already know” vs. Rowling saying she didn’t write Dumbledore’s sexuality into the books because “it wasn’t needed”

JK Rowling only said Dumbledore was gay because there weren’t any risks, the books were finished. Now she’s decided they aren’t, there are risks again and she’s chosen the same spineless path she’s used to. She is no LGBTQ ally, 100% of y’all should never treat her like one.

this is the proof that jk rowling only said dumbledore was gay in order to gain more attention, not bc she supported the lgbt+ community. she’s a fucking hypocrite are we surprised though? no. https://t.co/4CtKkwmd2X

Can you imagine being this rich and this cowardly? https://t.co/Pv1oD3Ef3B
— heidi heilig (@heidiheilig) January 31, 2018
fuck jk rowling. fuck her. dumbledore’s sexuality is such a huge part of his enmity with fucking grindelwald. i am so pissed off and upset right now. she is okay with an abuser working in her movie but not with shamelessly showing dumbledore’s sexuality?? this is so sad. https://t.co/jJIhMQDvVo

Listen, we all knew it was time to let go of #FantasticBeasts when they doubled down on Depp ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ that Yates confirmed they’re going to sidestep Dumbledore being gay in the film means JK and her team have fucked up huge and it’s time to ignore this franchise completely. Let it die. pic.twitter.com/Jj61G7CUkM
