The FDA has announced new rules for sunscreen with the intention of making it easier for consumers to choose wisely when picking out lotion.
Here are some of the changes you can expect:
— Lotions will no longer be able to claim that they├óΓé¼Γäóre ├óΓé¼┼ôwaterproof├óΓé¼┬¥ or ├óΓé¼┼ôsweatproof.├óΓé¼┬¥ No suncreens are. They will now just be able to say how many minutes they will last in the face of moisture. Sunscreen companies will also be banned from calling their products ├óΓé¼┼ôsunblock,├óΓé¼┬¥ as it├óΓé¼Γäós too misleading.
— Only sunscreens that have been proven to protect against both UVA and UVB rays will be allowed to be labeled ├óΓé¼┼ôbroad spectrum.├óΓé¼┬¥
Here are some tips for picking out sunscreen:
— Check for ingredients like Zinc oxide, Avobenzone or Titanium dioxide. The protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
— Pick sunscreens that are SPF 30 or higher
— Reapply… a lot. Putting on sunscreen in the morning and expecting it to work all day will NOT fly. Reapply, reapply, reapply!
