Tough break! When it rains, it pours, doesn’t it?
Because of the Hurricane Irene, who wreaked havoc all over the East Coast this weekend, box office numbers were significantly down this weekend. In fact, it may very well turn out to be the worst movie weekend of 2011.
In the end, the North American box office gross for the weekend was a dismal $80M, with The Help coming in at #1 again, making a mere $14.3M. New films, Colombiana and My Idiot Brother got hit way harder though, Colombiana came in at #2, which is good, but it only made $10.3M – a miniscule number considering what the studio was hoping for. However, a spokesperson for Sony insisted that the movie did considerably well in light of the hurricane. Hey, if they’re happy, alls good in the world.
Hopefully, Weinstein Co will give the same love to Paul Rudd’s My Idiot Brother, which opened to $2.3M on Friday and $2.5M Saturday. A $5.8M weekend? YIKES!
Well Irene, you may not have made a personal appearance on the other coast, but Hollywood is certainly feeling your wrath.
