Iggy Azalea‘s had one hell of a tumultuous career… but don’t count her out just yet!
It’s been quite a minute since we’ve caught up with the Aussie rapper who saw a bit of success just a few years ago with her 2014 hit single, Fancy. Aside from a canceled world tour and a few failed romances sprinkled in between, things have been pretty quiet for her since then.
In a new interview with Cosmo, the 29-year-old opened up about the five-year gap in her career, taking time off to address mental health struggles, her latest comeback studio album, and more!

If you’ll recall, Azalea was previously linked to NBA baller Nick Young around the same time her music career really began to take off. The pair dated and even got engaged at one point before their relationship (allegedly ruined by reports of Young’s infidelity) ultimately ended in a messy and public breakup in 2016.
The recording artist also often found herself feuding with the media or other artists over time whenever any (often valid) criticism arose about her music — a move that didn’t fare well for her in the court of public opinion.
The Black Widow artist admitted her team had to step in and encourage her to get help. Speaking of her two-week stay at a mental health retreat in Arizona two years ago, she told the publication:
“They just didn’t want me to f**k up my own life. Basically.”
At the wellness facility, Iggy said she worked with a therapist to go over every aspect of her life, including “not being able to separate well-intended criticism from trolling.” She explained:
“I just couldn’t get out of functioning at this insanity level. Where you’re like, ‘Whoa, hold on, don’t operate the vehicle.’…The whole thing was very overwhelming.”
Fast forward to the present day and a healthier, more confident version of Azalea who’s making the most of her “second chance” in the industry with the July release of her second studio album, In My Defense.
“You get as many shots as you are able to persevere for in life, no matter what you do. You get as many chances as you’re willing to sit there and f**king really fight for tooth and nail. And I’m not going to stop fighting for a second chance until somebody f**king gives me one and then I’m not going to f**k it up.”
Despite any previous criticisms about her lyrical content and controversial style (read: cultural appropriation), the songstress promised the 12-track project still represents her unapologetic self.
She confessed:
“I’m still going to make the same type of music and still be ridiculous and larger than life. So I can’t be that f**king sorry about it.”
Taking a deeper look at her past mistakes has actually made her hopeful for the future, as she added:
“There’s a part of me that doesn’t necessarily dispute everything I’ve said. But I definitely feel like, Who the f**k is that person?’ It’s that time in your life when you think, ‘I’m a real grown-up and I know everything and you can’t tell me s**t.'”
While channelling her inner Plato, the star quipped:
“The older I get, the less I f**king know about anything.”
We hear you, girl!
Iggy is currently dating rapper Playboi Carti and added she hopes to become a mom one day.
We’re rooting for your happiness and good things all around for you, girl!
