Smoking is bad for you, and as of the past decade: it’s also bad for your wallet.
Illinois is taking the later and REALLY making sure that’s the case!
An Illinois Senate committee has just approved a raise in cigarette taxes by $1 a pack.
All it needs now is a final vote on the proposal. After the full Senate approves the idea, it goes to the governor.
This sounds like a win-win to us. If people aren’t smart enough to stop smoking, the extra tax will go to state Medicaid budget.
If people refuse to pay this, it might mean that they’ll quit smoking in general — which is a WAY better outcome!
Other tobacco products would also see state taxes increase!
It’s just plain healthier to stop smoking. It’s always been cheaper, for sure!
