‘Suspected’ Dark Knight gunman James Holmes’ first court appearance ended minutes ago, and we learned he will most likely be charged with first degree murder for killing 12, which could potentially lead to the death penalty.
Colorado District Attorney Carol Chambers shares insight into the future of the case, and in a post-hearing press conference informed viewers how:
“Victims’ families will be consulted before a decision is made on seeking the death penalty for Holmes… That decision is months away.”
Chambers shared how showing extreme indifference towards his own actions could lead in to the charge of first degree murder.
Chambers also declined to comment on whether Holmes’ family was cooperating with the investigation, which she stated is still very much “active and ongoing.”
Holmes was initially arrested on probable cause determination, and after an overview of evidence, the court has enough to keep Holmes in custody. He is currently being held in isolation, under special protection without bond, which officials will continue to enforce.
After viewing James during his court appearance, his strange, unfocused and erratic eye movements caused speculation as to whether he was medicated, which Chambers couldn’t confirm or deny.
Will James try and weasel his way out of prison by claiming insanity? Chambers claimed it’s NOT likely.
So far, no decision has been made as to HOW many charges will be filed, but James will not be charged for domestic terrorism. The immediate next step will be talking to those involved, to gather as MUCH information as possible, over the next few months.
Chambers indicated that the entire trial could take over a year, and urges anyone with pertinent information to step forward.
