Jennifer Garner Talks About The 'Loss' Of Not Having Ben Affleck In The Same House To Co-Parent With

Jennifer Garner is getting real about how difficult it can be to co-parent when you live in different places.

During Bustle‘s One Nightstand YouTube series on Tuesday, the actress chatted with host Charlotte Owen about her favorite book series, Anne of Green Gables. If you aren’t familiar with the series, the Lucy Maud books follow the story of Anne Shirley, who was mistakenly adopted by siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert.

While touching on the subject of complicated parenting like that, Charlotte wanted to know how Jen and her ex Ben Affleck found the balance to co-parent after a split. The 53-year-old said:

“I think I do a bit of both. And I think my kids’ dad does too. Especially when your kids grow up in two separate households, I become mom and dad and he becomes dad and mom.”

The couple’s kids are Violet, 20, Fin, 17, and Samuel, 13 — and Jennifer says their dual-home parenting is a bit of a “loss” since the parents aren’t together:

“You kind of can’t help it, right? Because you don’t have the benefit of both sides of the yin and yang being in the same house … There’s a little bit of loss in that, but there’s also something gained in that.”

She explained she learned to have a bit of appreciation “in the way” both she and Ben parent their kids:

“You also just learn. It’s made me let go and not focus so much on bringing up.”
