Jerry O’Connell knows he was an awful boyfriend to Giuliana Rancic!
In 2015, the entertainment reporter opened up about her short-lived relationship with the Jerry Maguire star in her memoir Going Off Script. The pair began dating in 2003, but he dumped her a year later. How Jerry ended things was horrible, too. Giuliana claimed in her book that he broke up with her over an intercom, saying:
“Nope, sorry, homegirl. Things change, but you take care, OK?”
Wow, Jerry!!!
A note to everyone out there: Do NOT break up with your significant other this way. And more than a decade later, Jerry now admits he knows he effed up! Although the actor doesn’t “recall [his] exact wording,” he fully owned up to breaking up with Giuliana over the intercom while on the Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa podcast on Monday:
“I can’t deny that I said that. It doesn’t sound like something I would say, but again, if I was writing a memoir, it made for a good quote.”

Jerry “applaud[ed]” the former E! News host for “using colorful dialogue and everything” in her book. But at that same time, he knows he was a “terrible boyfriend” to her, especially because of their “poor” breakup. The Talk alum even issued an apology to Giuliana before coming clean about another part of the story! He said:
“[Another woman] was inside my condominium. … Giuliana Rancic wanted entry into my condominium. Thank goodness, buzzer, gate, security. I paid a pretty hefty homeowners’ fee for these things. Cameras and everything.”
Oh, Jerry…
The 52-year-old host didn’t reveal who had been in his place at the time, though Kelly Ripa speculated it was either Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell or his current wife, Rebecca Romijn.
Jerry went on to say his relationship with Giuliana “was [already] in trouble” by that point, and he refused to hash it out because he “didn’t want any confrontation,” explaining:
“I said, ‘I did not know you were coming. You can’t come here unannounced.’ Notice no one had a key, so the relationship was not like that. There was no warning, and I didn’t want someone coming in because I didn’t want any confrontation.”
Jerry wouldn’t confirm if they had been exclusive at the time, but Kelly pointed out that Giuliana claimed he cheated with Geri. To which the My Secret Identity alum praised the “great” way the Fashion Police star described the alleged infidelity in the book in response. What did she say? Giuliana rewrote:
“[He gave me] as much emotion as the customer service representative who tells you your bags missed the flight.”
Oof!
