There were few couples more iconic in the early 2000s than Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey.
Viewers of Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica were captivated by the attractive pair for three seasons until it came to an end in 2005, the same year Jess asked for a divorce from the 98 Degrees singer. In her new memoir, Open Book, the now-39-year-old is just that when it comes to discussing her first husband.

Ashlee Simpson‘s big sis tells People the hunky singer was her “first love,” and reflected on her previously naive self in an excerpt of the memoir shared with the publication:
“Nick loved the fact I was so strong in my faith and that I had this wide-eyed innocent approach to life. When he proposed in 2002, I said yes.”
Miz Simpson discussed the intense pressure she and her husband felt at the time from the media and their reality TV cameras:
“We were young and pioneering our way through reality television, always miced and always on. We worked and we were great at it but when it came time to being alone, we weren’t great at it anymore. We really got crushed by the media and by ourselves. I couldn’t lie to our fans and I couldn’t give somebody hope that we were this perfect golden couple.”
Unlike other couples where there has been bad blood after a breakup, it doesn’t necessarily seem to be the case in this situation. The Public Affair singer explained:
“I respect Nick very much. I was really young and my success hadn’t really begun. He knew me as this young innocent 18-year-old that had never been introduced to the world in so many ways. I went straight from my father to him. Nick’s very smart. He was eight years older than me, but he was also young.”
As you’re likely aware, Nick is now married to Vanessa Minnillo Lachey with three children of his own. She added regarding their time together:
“We meant a lot to each other and we always will. I want to be very respectful because I married him for a reason and we were together for seven years for a reason. He has a family now and I would never say anything to disrespect that.”
