Joe Exotic may be quarantined in prison, but in some ways, things couldn’t be going better for the Tiger King star.
First, his show became a runaway hit — in fact, according to a report from Netflix last week, it broke the record for the most-watched title for the longest period of time (15 days!) on the streaming service.
Then, he experienced an overwhelming outpouring of support, with celebs calling for his release from prison, dressing up and doing impersonations of him on social media, and fighting over who gets to play him in an adaptation of the show!
Now, the incarcerated zookeeper gets to add another feather to his cap as his music has started to climb the charts.
Spotify released some numbers following the addition of Joe’s song I Saw a Tiger to the service’s catalogue — and it turns out he’s gained listeners in every single one of Spotify’s 79 markets across the globe.
If that doesn’t surprise you, maybe this will: the country streaming Exotic’s song at a higher rate than any other is… Denmark!
We didn’t realize the Danes loved faux country artists so much! LOLz!
SPIN magazine reported on some of the Netflix star’s streaming numbers, including this tidbit:
“The song’s average daily share of its streams has even gone up by 18% since it was added to the platform as well. And millennials are the ones listening. Spotify revealed that folks ages 25-29 consuming his music at the highest rate, followed by ages 30-34.”
All in all, not too shabby for a man who doesn’t actually write or sing his music! As you’ll recall, most of his songs were actually performed by musicians Danny Clinton and Vince Johnson, including I Saw A Tiger.
And yet Exotic’s star continues to rise, despite not producing his own music, and despite multiple people close to Joe saying he’s even more evil than what we saw on TV, and despite allegations of animal abuse and even bestiality, and despite the murder-for-hire plot that landed him in prison in the first place (which he denies)…
Looking at it that way, the fact that Carole Baskin is apparently afraid to leave her own house because of death threats seems almost unfair!
Still, newfound fame can’t change the fact that Joe is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence, even if he himself claims he’s the victim of a vast conspiracy. He’ll just have to comfort himself with those Danish streaming numbers!
