We don’t hear about these kinds of charges very often in the United States, but the United Kingdom does not take kindly to their citizens making bigoted comments toward others.
English soccer captain John Terry, who plays for Chelsea in the Premier League, has been charged for racially abusing a player on an opposing team.
Terry allegedly made the comments toward Queens Park Rangers player Anton Ferdinand in a recent match, prompting the Chief Crown Prosecutor for London to pursue a conviction, saying:
“I have today advised the Metropolitan Police Service that John Terry should be prosecuted for a racially aggravated public order offense following comments allegedly made during a Premier League football match between Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea on 23 October 2011. I am satisfied there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and it is in the public interest to prosecute this case.”
The accused soccer captain will appear before magistrates in west London on February 1, 2012 where he’ll face a maximum fine of ├é┬ú2,500.
Terry swears he is innocent and has vowed to clear his name, but sources say he was caught on camera delivering a racist remark.
Maybe if we took similar incidents like this in the U.S. as serious as they do in England, this country would be a little more tolerant of other’s differences.\
