'Empire' Execs Discussing Plans To Bring Jussie Smollett Back For The Final Season!

Jussie Smollett might return to Empire

It might not be curtains for Jussie Smollet on Empire after all!

According to reports, bosses for the Fox musical drama are considering bringing the disgraced actor back during the show’s sixth and final season months after his character was written off due to the attack he was accused of staging for publicity.

As fans know, the 37-year-old was axed from Empire in season five after Chicago police claimed Smollett had faked getting attacked by two men who had allegedly hurled racist and homophobic slurs at him on the streets of the Windy City. Smollett was accused of fabricating the incident and charged with making a false police report; although those charges were eventually dropped, Fox suits decided it was best to sever the show from the real-life drama.

But now, discussions are apparently underway to possibly have the star return!

In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Brett Mahoney admitted that it would be “weird” to end the show without Smollett, who played one of the main characters, explaining:

“It would be weird in my mind to end this family show and this family drama of which he was such a significant part of without seeing him.”

While Mahoney confirmed Smollett’s potential return was being “discussed,” he made it clear that nothing was official just yet, adding:

“It’s fair to say it’s being discussed, but there’s no plan as of yet to bring him back. There’s been no decision made.”

Wow! That’s a huge leap from creator Lee Daniels’ stance back in June, when he declared  the star would never return to the series.

In response to a report at the time that Jussie was going to be brought back in the second half of season six, Daniels tweeted:

“Jussie will NOT be returning to Empire.”

Hmmm… we wonder if Mr. Daniels knows about these recent “discussions”?

Jussie’s final Empire appearance — or so we thought — came in season five, with his character Jamal Lyon marrying boyfriend Kai.

Off-screen, the actor reportedly filed a counter-suit against the city of Chicago, claiming he was the victim of “malicious prosecution” which caused him “substantial economic damages as well as reputational harm, humiliation, mental anguish and extreme emotional distress” while his case was pending.
