ICYMI, Jussie filed a police report in late January after claiming he was allegedly attacked by two men who shouted racial and homophobic slurs, beat him, poured a substance on him, and wrapped rope around his neck.
Yesterday, the performer was officially indicted and charged with filing a false police report, and faces up to three years in prison.
In today’s press conference, Chicago Police Department Superintendent, Eddie Johnson, shared a pointed and heated statement first. He was “offended” and “angry” by Jussie’s actions and said he took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career.
Here is the full press conference (below)!

Following a detailed account of events that lead police to the alleged “hoax” conclusion, Johnson said an apology from Smollett to the city of Chicago would be a good place to start for justice:

“Absolute justice would be an apology to this city that he smeared, admitting what he did and then be man enough to offer what he should offer up in terms of resources put into this.”

Jussie’s bail hearing is set for today at 1:30 p.m. local Chicago time.
