Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter is addressing the rumor she suffered a mental breakdown and was checked into a hospital because of it.
With the 2024 presidential election coming to a close in favor of Donald Trump this week, Kamala Harris came forward with a beautiful concession speech urging the American people to continue keeping hope alive. She said:
“Hear me when I say the light of the American promise will always burn bright. As long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting!”

It’s an emotional time for a lot of people scared of what our country’s next four years will look like. And one of those people is Kamala’s stepdaughter Ella Emhoff.
During the Vice President’s speech on Wednesday, Ella was photographed with tears streaming down her face while listening to her stepmomma’s moving speech. And in the wake of the vulnerable photo, a hateful rumor has caught fire amongst right-wing conservatives on social media that Ella had a “mental breakdown” and had to be checked into a mental health facility due to the election results. But the 25-year-old is here to set the record straight.
On Saturday, Dough Emhoff’s daughter took to her Instagram Story to slam the rumor and everyone spreading it:
“Ok I’m just gonna go out and say it. There’s a rumor about me having a mental breakdown and getting checked into a hospital. Not true. Also f**k you if you’re out there spreading that. There’s nothing wrong with showing emotion and crying. Anyone who says there is probably needs a good cry.”
Seriously! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with showing emotion during such a crucial time in our nation’s history! Especially now that women’s right, immigrants’ rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and the rights of so many others are on the line.
Ella continued:
“I’ve struggled with my mental health my whole life and I’m not ashamed of it.”
And NO one should be! So the fact that she would be shamed for something so delicate online — even though it’s not even true — is very uncool!
The young woman concluded by noting she’s just been spending time with her dog Jerry over the past few days:
“I’ve literally just been here playing fetch with Jerry.”

On X (Twitter) on Saturday, Ella’s biological mom Kerstin Emhoff called the rumor “MAGA bs.” She wrote:
“More MAGA bs against my family. Leave my kids alone!!! Ella is doing great and spending a lovely day with her mom! Having the ability to show your emotions is something we should all hope for. It’s ok to not feel great right now. We aren’t letting anyone break our family down.”
