Wow! Karen Read has been found NOT GUILTY of murder!
On the fourth day of deliberations following a controversial trial, the jury in Dedham, Massachusetts declared Karen — who had been accused of running over her boyfriend — guilty of only one charge: operating under the influence. Per People, they found her not guilty of the most serious charge, second-degree murder, as well as not guilty of the other charges — manslaughter while operating under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Pretty much a best-case scenario for her!
Per CNN, according to the judge, Karen will not serve any jail time at all following the acquittal. Just probation for one year!

If you don’t recall, Karen was on trial for the murder of her boyfriend, a Boston police officer named John O’Keefe. She was arrested after John was found badly injured and unresponsive in the snow outside the home of then-Boston police officer Brian Albert in Canton, MA, on January 29, 2022.
Prosecutors alleged the 45-year-old backed into John and left him to die after dropping him off at a party at the house following a night of drinking, noting his autopsy revealed he died from blunt force trauma and hypothermia. Her car’s taillight was also broken. Not a lot of evidence, but it’s a nice, simple story to present to a jury.
However, the defense argued Karen was the target of a law enforcement cover-up! They claimed O’Keefe — who allegedly had a long-standing issue with another person at the party — had been beaten inside the home, bitten by a dog, and left outside to die. Karen, they wanted the jury to believe, was just a patsy.
This is the second trial for this case. The first trial was declared a mistrial in July 2024 after the jury was deadlocked after five days of deliberations. So, to go through this all again and come out with a result like this is huge for Karen. She and her supporters celebrated at the courthouse as the verdict was shared, with some yelling outside per People:
“Karen is free!”
Karen thanked them all as she exited the building with her family while pink confetti fell, telling reporters per WCVB:
“I want to say two things. Number one is I could not be standing here without these amazing supporters who have supported me and my team financially, and more importantly, emotionally for almost four years. And the second thing I want to say is no one has fought harder for justice for John O’Keefe than I have — than I have and my team.”
