Kat Von D Is Not Sorry About Naming Her Lipstick 'Underage Red,' And She's Not Pulling It From Her Makeup Line!

Kat Von D refuses to apologize for lipstick name!
Kat Von D is sorry she’s not sorry!
The tattoo artist faced some criticism earlier this week for naming one of her lipsticks from her makeup line with Sephora Underage Red.

When a shopper tweeted that the moniker seemed inappropriate, the tweet (with an image of the name) went viral, prompting many to say that the branding was sending the wrong message.
Kat published a lengthy explanation of her inspiration behind the name on her Facebook account, saying:

“Underage Red” was one out of four lipstick shades that I released at the very start of the makeup line, seven years ago.
I clearly remember wearing a variation of this shade when I was 16 years old. I also remember the feeling of wanting so badly to go see a specific concert at this age, and not being able to get in to the venue because I was underage.
To me, “Underage Red” is feminine rebellion.

She went on to boldly proclaim that she wouldn’t apologize for it, nor would she change the name:

“So, NO. I refuse to sacrifice my integrity and creative freedom. NO. I will not be pulling “Underage Red” from my collection. And NO. This is not an apology.
If you read the word “underage” and you automatically jump to a disgusting conclusion, I ask you to perhaps question your own mind and thoughts. Consider the damage such negativity can actually cause, verses actually help.”

Okay, but the thing is that the word “underage” specifically has certain negative connotations that cannot be overlooked. It tends to imply something illegal, and the word has certainly been in the news lately with 17-year-old Kylie Jenner‘s reported relationship with 25-year-old Tyga.
It’s not at all surprising that people took offense to it.
But anyway, it’s up to Kat to determine what her products should be named, and she’s definitely standing by this decision!
We guess she could also take some comfort in the fact that the lipstick has been around for seven years without anybody batting an eyelash until now.
