We’d almost like to meet the person who came up with the name of this lipstick. Just to ask them, “WHY???”
And if that person was indeed Kat Von D, whose self-titled makeup line for Sephora sells the shade, then her answer might be something like:
“At the end of the day, it’s just a f*cking lipstick.”
That’s what she reportedly tweeted then deleted following criticism that the name Underage Red for one of her Studded Kiss Lipsticks was not only inappropriate and in bad taste, but that it also seemed to glamorize statutory rape.
The shade has apparently been available in Sephora for a few years now, but only recently got attention when someone tweeted an image of the name:
The tweet sparked a massive response from people who agreed that the lipstick name was in poor taste — but also backlash from fans of the tattoo artist who argued that it wasn’t a big deal.
This isn’t the first time one of Kat’s lipstick names has come under fire for being offensive. Sephora was forced to pull a lipstick called Celebutard from stores after a similar reaction back in 2012.
Kat’s line is known for having rather provocative names, and includes another shade called Lolita.
Some people have also pointed out that MAC Cosmetics sells a lip gloss called Underage on its site, though there hasn’t been specific criticism leveled against it as of yet.
Kind of baffling that marketing executives at two different makeup companies thought “underage” was a good name for lip products.
We certainly don’t get it!
