Katie Couric. Diane Sawyer. Two of the most important newswomen in history.
But according to a new tell-all book, their history together is actually pretty ugly!
Sheila Weller‘s The News Sorority tells the story of a behind-the-scenes feud whose fallout we didn’t even know we were watching!
According to the book, when Katie and Diane were heading rival morning news shows Today and Good Morning America, they frequently competed for guests- and the competition got personal! Weller writes:
“When a friend of Diane’s, a public figure, was being pursued by Katie’s people, the wooed eminence got a call from [Diane’s movie director husband] Mike Nichols, who said ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ in a very nice way, to be sure ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ that he and Diane would essentially cut off all social contact if their friend appeared on Today.”
The book also alleges bad behavior on the part of Katie. When Diane got an interview they were both gunning for, Katie is quoted as saying:
“I wonder who she blew this time to get it.”
Dayum!
Neither Diane’s nor Katie’s reps had any comment on the claims made by the book, but former ABC News President David Westin had a harsh response:
“Certainly she did no fact-checking with us. It seems to me like ancient history, whether fact or fiction.”
Hmm, that’s a strong dismissal, but not exactly a denial. Either way, sounds like a pretty fascinating read.
