Kelly Osbourne has come a long way.
While the Fashion Police alum is killing it these days, the It-girl’s road to success wasn’t necessarily an easy one. In fact, in her new memoir, There Is No F*cking Secret: Letters From a Badass Bitch, the TV personality opened up about her struggles with drugs and alcohol — and how her addiction led her to being committed to a mental institution for three days.

On this challenging point in her life, Miz Osbourne revealed:

“Mum once locked me in a mental institution for three days, and it scared the hell out of me. ├óΓé¼┬ª I had to wear paper shoes, since I could potentially kill myself with a shoelace, and wasn’t allowed to have anything metal, not even a spoon. I wasn’t suicidal by medical standards, but I heard Mum’s message loud and clear: stop using drugs before I was gone for good.”

And while the 32-year-old has previously noted that her first exposure to drugs was when she was given liquid Vicodin after a tonsillectomy while a preteen, the fashionista’s drug use spiraled out of control because of two traumatic instances. Specifically, Kelly turned to drugs as her mother Sharon Osbourne battled cancer and following her father Ozzy Osbourne‘s near-fatal ATV accident back in 2003.
Osbourne even witnessed her father flatline in front of her, as she wrote:

“From my hips down, I felt warm ├óΓé¼┬ª I didn’t realize it right away, but the warmth I was feeling was actually my father’s blood. I started to scream as the nurses shoved me out of the way… He flatlined in front of me.”

Talk about a traumatic situation. Poor thing.
Although both her parents survived their respective health scares, Kelly was greatly affected by the experiences. The Hollywood scion noted:

“The only way I could even face my life was by opening that pill bottle, shaking out a few pills ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ or a handful ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ into my palm, and throwing them down my throat.”

Oof. Kelly even described herself as a “trash can” drug user, meaning she’d try pretty much anything (except crack). However, the One Word singer’s drug usage began to put others in harms way as she once thought it would be amusing to “slip MDMA into [her friend’s] drink without his knowledge”. Whoa.
In regards to this particular incident, Kelly explained:

“Today the thought makes my skin crawl├óΓé¼┬ª The only thing that saved our friendship after my severe lapse in judgment was that when the drugs kicked in, Omar interpreted the strange feelings he was having to a urinary tract infection. When he came down, even he thought it was so funny that he forgave me.”

It took Kelly six years to really get sober — including four visits to rehab, six detoxes, and one visit to a mental health facility.
And despite her father’s own issues with drugs, Kelly refuses to dub her upbringing as a cause for her addiction:

“I don’t blame Dad for the fact that I ended up a drug user, nor do I blame growing up in the public eye. For me, drugs were a coping mechanism that also fueled my self destruction…Now, I manage pain through creativity, friendship and self-care.”

We’re happy to hear that.
TBH, after learning all of this, we are more than intrigued to snag a copy of Kelly’s book out today, April 25.
