Wow, Kim Kardashian West really outdid herself this year. This may be the most controversial Christmas present since that guy in Love Actually got his best friend’s new wife a bunch of cue cards telling her he was in love with her.

Yes, Kim and Kanye West splurged, spending tens of thousands of dollars on North West‘s present — but this gift it wasn’t just the extravagance giving folks fits on social media, like with the life-size playhouse Kris Jenner bought Kylie‘s baby girl.

So what was this contentious gift?
Back in October, one of Michael Jackson‘s iconic jackets went up for auction, the one he wore to Elizabeth Taylor‘s 65th birthday party.
It was reportedly expected to go for between $10,000 and $20,000 but ended up going for a whopping $65,625 to an anonymous buyer.
You got it. Kim revealed in a Christmas Eve Instagram Story that she was the mysterious auction winner — and the jacket was going to her eldest daughter!
She said:
“For Christmas, Kanye and I gave North this jacket, and this was Michael Jackson’s jacket that he wore with Elizabeth Taylor. North is a really big Michael Jackson fan, and we knew she would love this.”

This isn’t just getting framed and hung on the wall either; Kim explained how they had it altered so six-year-old North could wear it:
“So we won this on an auction for Northy for Christmas and we had it like, tacked up so she can wear it. And the sleeves are half tacked up so when she gets older we can untack the sleeve so it can grow with her, and she can have this her whole life. And she is so grateful and so excited.”
65k on a six-year-old’s gift is already pretty damn controversial — but in this case it’s overshadowed by the elephant man’s skeleton in the room.
They gifted a child something owned by an accused child molester.
Yeah, Michael Jackson memorabilia is an strong choice in 2019 generally, but to your kid?? Clearly Kim and Kanye are in the camp who believe the King of Pop is innocent despite multiple accusers over the years telling very similar (and horribly disturbing) stories and MJ’s own admissions of his sleepovers with boys.
